2011 37th Annual Direct Instruction Conference Zig Keynote
Zig's keynote traces the evolution of DI from teaching to instructional programs. The first step was to provide solid teaching demonstrations of what kids could learn with careful instruction. The next step was to teach teachers to provide this instruction. Applying the same principles used for teaching kids to teaching teachers revealed that teachers needed programs that guided them. They needed not only a sequence of examples to present, but also a script that indicated the specific wording to use. By working with prototypes of the early DI programs, teachers became uniformly successful in teaching kids that had traditionally failed.
